After reading the article and watching that video in class it really got me thinking about our actual generation and how people view us. I have to agree and I have to disagree with both sides. As I was reading the article from the LA times there was one quote that stuck out to me and it goes as follows; This ceaseless pipeline of peer-to-peer activity is worrisome, he argues, not only because it crowds out the more serious stuff but also because it strengthens what he calls the pull of immaturity. When I read this quote all I could think of was how true it was. When he talks about the internet is a "pull of immaturity" I have to agree with him. I admit I have done this and I bet all of you sometime have also. There have been times when I have been upset with someone or a group of people and rather than going up and saying that I was upset with them to their face, it was easier to write a facebook status about it. Now I know hindsight 20/20, and looking back it is really immature and I try to stay away from doing it. I hate how in the video, Mark was basically saying that how everyone under 30 is apart of the dumbest generation. This is untrue. It is like someone said in class, you're going to think the people below you are worse than you. Its just nature and how we have always acted. Our generation is just smarter in different ways then the generations before us. For example, the other day in the Theater class, I sat there in agony as I watched him taking the long way around to get to a youtube video. The things that each generation had to learn about it very different. They learned things to help better their lives and we are doing the same.
I acutally just found this video like a week ago and its of this old couple trying to take a picture of themselves but they actually took a video. Watch it the whole way, its hilarious. You can find it in my link section.

I agree with you that this has allot to do with the difference in every generation and we might feel the same way when were in out 50’s about the generations following us. I but I do think technology and social media play a role in given us the ability to be lazy and wasteful with our time and intern seem dumber.
ReplyDeleteI just watched that video of the old couple it is so funny! I agree that even though the older generation might know a lot more than us when it comes to history and politics, when it comes to technology they don't know what they are doing, and in this day and age it is somewhat crucial in order to understand technology in order to function in everyday life. Just the other month I had to help my great grandmother turn her TV on and function, she didn't understand that both the cable box and the TV needed to be on. She also doesn't understand how to use her cell phone that we gave her in case of an emergency. She doesn't understand you have to hit the send button after you dial someone's number. I hate to think that one day she is going to have an emergency and not be able to call anyone.
ReplyDeleteI too have made the mistake of posting something online that should have been said to the person's face instead. It is much more immature to gossip about your problems on facebook than to approach them in person and solve them. I agree that we look down upon people younger than us.
ReplyDeleteI liked what you said about the facebook status. I know I've done dumb stuff like that too. When I would be mad or upset at someone I made a status and I look back on that now and think how dumb that was. If I had a problem with someone I wish I would have done it in a more mature way.
ReplyDeleteI agree that understanding how to use technology effectively is important, but I'm not that compelled by the group's examples. Is it more important to know how to turn the cable on, for example, than who our allies were in WWII? Technology is a tool. Knowledge is not.
